This photographic series loosely follows on from my bachelor’s thesis and is inspired by ethnographic texts that explore the body as a cultural phenomenon. The photographs draw on ritual and symbolic meanings of fertility and sexuality that were present in traditional folkloric culture and manifested, among other things, in the visual design of folk costumes. Although nudity in contrast with the folk costume may initially appear provocative or inappropriate, it in fact has deep historical roots within vernacular culture. The naked body has long been a part of rural life – especially in the context of rituals, initiation ceremonies, and seasonal festivities. This thesis expands the focus beyond the Moravian region to include costume motifs from other cultural areas, specifically Germany, Slovakia, Ukraine, and Kosovo.
